Carpenter Box was proud to sponsor and attend this year’s Made in the South East Awards, held 24th November at the Hilton Hotel South Terminal in Gatwick.

Carpenter Box Partner and Head of Manufacturing Chris Coopey had the honour of awarding Xtrac the top prize of Large Manufacturer of the Year. The Berkshire-based company, which makes transmission systems for the Formula One industry, was one of eight winners on a night which celebrated the very best manufacturers from across the region.

Insider’s regional business editor Philip Cunliffe praised all the finalists, saying their excellence and quality is revered the world over. The event was compèred by broadcaster Jason Mohammad and featured a keynote speech from previous METALL speaker Dr Robert Pearson from Cobham Antenna Systems.

The Made in the South East Awards attract manufacturers of all sizes from all parts of the region, and the shortlists and winners from previous years have included some of the most innovative and successful companies in the South East. Last night’s winners were automatically shortlisted for Insider’s national awards final, Made in the UK 2017.

Barnbrook supplies global primes and sells its wide range of products in international markets from its base in Fareham.

Export Award
Winner: MRT Castings
MRT supplies diecast and machined aluminium components to customers throughout Europe and North America, with its largest markets being Ireland, Hungary, Germany and France.
Shortlisted: Willard Conservation, Xtrac, Moo Free Chocolates

Technology Award
Winner: Quorum Technologies
East Sussex-based Quorum Technologies manufactures scientific instruments primarily used for electron microscopy (EM) sample preparation.
Shortlisted: Chemigraphic, Innovative Physics, Barnbrook Systems

Apprenticeship & Training Scheme Award
Winner: Electronic Temperature Instruments
A specialist manufacturer of temperature instruments based in Worthing, the business has been running its apprenticeship scheme for three years.
Shortlisted: Chemigraphic, Apex Lifts

Food & Drink Award
Winner: Higgidy
From its base in Shoreham-on-Sea, Higgidy has become a familiar brand in many supermarkets, known for its delicious home-made pies, quiches and sausage rolls.
Shortlisted: Raise Bakery, Fridays

Innovation Award
Winner: MR Solutions Group
Guildford-based MR Solutions’ innovative scanners are helping to speed up preclinical research and to accelerate drug development.
Shortlisted: Vision Engineering, Luxonic, Electronic Temperature Instruments

SME Manufacturer of the Year Award (under £25m)
Winner: Luxonic
Since starting in 1986, Luxonic has grown to become one of the UK’s foremost designers of lighting and as such is a great example of successful British manufacturing and entrepreneurship, driven by investment in talent and innovation.
Shortlisted: Captec, European Springs & Pressings, Barnbrook Systems

Large Manufacturer of the Year Award (over £25m)
Winner: Xtrac
Xtrac employs nearly 300 staff, all of whom are shareholders in the business through the company’s award-winning employee benefit trust.
Shortlisted: Formaplex, Amphenol
